Keith Olbermann

The monolithic liberal media shrinks.

Having so many liberals on TV (2) was just getting out of hand.
Good job MSNBC!

Brain Fever

What can I say.

I think the internet is a great thing, but I'm certain that without it, we wouldn't be subjected to this ridiculous phenomena.

Society of the Spectacle
The spectacle’s estrangement from the acting subject is expressed by the fact that the individual’s gestures are no longer his own; they are the gestures of someone else who represents them to him."
— Guy Debord (The Society of the Spectacle)

One has to believe a large number of fictions just to get out of bed in the morning, but give me a break.

How Long?

As things heat up in the right-wing campaign to convince America that they're actually the victims of the Tucson shooting, can an Ashley Todd be far behind?

It's funny, they're creative and courageous liars, but it drives them crazy to get caught doing it.

A civil discourse.

Fantastic!

Friend forward.

It's unfair of me to point out...

...that these things have been around for a long time.

Also...
If I was a conservative, honestly trying to illustrate the negative trends in political discourse, I might post the same example. So unfair.

High Functioning Retards

This is what's happening on the TV...hard to believe.

One Ring to Rule Them All...

From Driftglass:

I for one would be genuinely delighted if tonight's heartfelt pleas from Keith Olbermann for everyone to beat their verbal spears into pruning hooks blossomed into an actual movement, but the sad truth is that he could have said exactly the same thing about almost exactly the same people following the Oklahoma City bombing back in the Conservative rage-drunk, Hate-Radio-fueled militia-movements/black helicopter/Clinton-is-a-depraved-murderer/government-workers-are-parasites 1990s.

Rachel Maddow could and did say almost exactly the same thing about almost exactly the same people following the assassination of Dr. George Tiller. The sad truth is that Hate is the Right's Ring of Power. They're never going to give it up, because they know the minute they do—(that's) the minute they're no longer allowed to pretend that Liberals are evil, freedom-hating fifth-columnist monsters who are dragging America into a Marxist abyss on the secret orders of our Kenyan Usurper Overlord -- their whole ideology would implode...they would never win another election...and tens of thousands of powerful, well-remunerated insiders from Rush Limbaugh to David Gregory who depend on that hate for their daily bread would suddenly have to go out and find honest work.

This is true.

The media narrative is now revolving around the reliable fallback—the shooter is a deranged lunatic—implying that he's too nuts to be incited by right-wing rhetoric or gun culture rhetoric (same thing). Nice try.

As the reactions and debate unfold, it is clear that American journalism is entirely broken—as an institution, they do everything they can to help conceal the venality of right wing thought. The millionaires-pretending to be working class-pundits (I'm talking about you Chris Mathews, David Gregory, Howard Kurtz, etc.), need to be ridiculed...then ignored.

Updated: This works too.

Death Fantasies and Dreams of Bloodlust*

People out there have them and the same people have the unique freedom to buy guns, lots of guns.

Amid the boilerplate media reactions to this sad event, watch for the ones who see this, ultimately, as a threat to gun ownership.

Also...track the artful "both sides do it" narratives that fall apart with even casual scrutiny.

Updated: Well, clutch my pearls...

John Boehner

A fantastic Matt Taibbi article in Rolling Stone...

In sports, we talk about athletes who are the "total package," and that term comes close to describing Boehner's talent for perpetuating our corrupt and debt-addled status quo: He's a five-tool insider who can lie, cheat, steal, play golf, change his mind on command and do anything else his lobbyist buddies and campaign contributors require of him to get the job done.

For me, Boehner and his politics are reminders of the years I lived in Cincinnati, Ohio. One of the most regressive and lizard-brained populations in the country—where thrived a smug Republicanism that didn't bother to hide its corporatist motivations.

In the late 80s and throughout the 90s, state and national politicians in southwest Ohio blithely consumed and dispensed the ideological turds of Ronald Reagan.

I believe the right-wing's initiative to get the middle class to vote consistently against its own interests really succeeded  there for the first time—possibly the birth place of today's Tea Party.
